| A new off-road race which promises to be challenging, with a bit of mud thrown in ... well, I just have to give it a go! The race venue is only a stone's throw from Trerulefoot, at the Bake Lakes (some of you will recognise it as Deviock Bounder territory). Organised by the Liskeard & Looe Lions Clubs, this event was supporting Archie, a youngster who has lost both his legs to meningitis (for more info. go to www.archiesstory.co.uk). There was a 6-mile all-terrain race, as well as a 1.1/2 mile fun run, or you could walk the course, so something for everyone. A total of 133 took part, which included some hashers (Steve & Wendy, take note for next year!) There were even murmurs of approval when the organisers told us how muddy it would be!
Having done a 10-mile training run the day before, I wasn't sure how I'd fare with a punishing off-roader, but from the first churned-up field my body seemed to kick in to race mode and I realised how much I've missed these kind of races over recent months. Fields, footpaths, woods, plenty of mud and a steep hill - this one had the lot. And we were favoured with good weather - sunny with just a slight breeze, perfect for running. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was pleased with my time of 49:49.
The event raised nearly £500, and the Lions hope to do it again next year. So come on Carnies, it's less than an hour's drive away and I've checked it out for you, so how about it?
