Cubert 5 - the runner's view
Carnies report on busy evening's racing...
A massive field of around 570 runners crammed into the new start area of this year's Cubert 5.  The Tree Tops Inn was spinning in it's grave as the hordes thundered through the village, long gone the old days of a hundred or so pairs of feet scuttling through there.

The new finish in the school field seemed to be a welcome change although a little crowded (Jo T wiped out a couple of the finish line officials we hear!)

A whole load of Carnies were claiming some good times and PB's.

Here's what a few of you had to say.........

Laura’s report:

“As I'm concentrating on my weight loss campaign this year, I wasn't going to enter any races until I do the Great South Run with Sandy in October - however, I was 'gently persuaded' to do the Cubert 5 and dragged Andy along out of retirement - if I was going to suffer so was he!!!

We were both aiming to beat last years time and I decided that I was going to run on my own and really see what I could do without the 2st in weight I carried around the course last year.

It was another lovely Cubert evening and as we walked along to the start we were surprised to hear the hooter go, a sudden start to say the least!!!  I started off by doing a bit of dodging and weaving, determined to get into my own space and start 'racing', Sandy tagged along with me and we pretty soon got into a good rhythm, passing the first mile marker at 8.40 - we thought that was way too fast but carried on regardless to the 2nd mile marker where we were still running under 9min miles.

Olivia went past us at this stage and we could see her for ages, as well as a glimpse of Chris Beresford in the distance - we really were in the wrong place!!  Along to the hilly bit, well, undulating really but it still felt like hard work - Sandy went ahead at this point, she's much better at hills than me, and I caught her up again along the flat bit where we tried to stop feeling sick and get the breathing back under control.

Along to the 3rd and 4th mile markers where we were still under that 9min mile pace - a miracle!!  We then made a joint decision to press on and hang in for a sub 45 minute finish time, in for a penny, in for a pound!  After keeping each other going up the 'hill' we could hear the shouting that told us we were within striking distance of the finish - once in the field Sandy put in one of her good sprint finishes and I did just enough to keep away from the person behind - we'd done it - 44.37 and 44.38 respectively and we were ecstatic to say the least!!!

Met Andy at the finish to discover he'd knocked a minute off last years time, finishing in 37 something with his training consisting of a few walks around Perranporth Golf Course!!!!  We then joined Wendy and Steve to cheer in the rest of our girls, especially our new girls who all did very well - some very impressive sprint finishes there girls.

And a big well done to Carole Drew who went under the 50 minutes, getting into form in time for the wedding of the year next week!!!!”

Helen T says….
“I had wangled lift and a place became available (big up to our new block booking system, we were even able to sell a few places back to Jan!) so trolled up to Cubert for first race since Oct, MB10k soooo didn’t count.  Was a little apprehensive at start as lack of race experience left me wondering if I had forgotten something, quick check to ensure was wearing vest and shorts and not embarrassingly come out with slippers on or something!  That said, nearly jumped out of my skin when hooter went, cant imagine why Linda and Brenda were commenting that they didn’t want to be anywhere near me?
Successfully avoided speed bumps and almost immediately remembered how hard running is, especially these shorter ones, the heavy 40 a day style breathing kicked in almost immediately and people hurried past me in an attempt to not be around when the clearly imminent collapse occurred.  Thoughts of a PB (or maybe a world record) emerged as I went through 3 miles at 3.33 but  I just couldn’t sustain the pace, well.... that and it being a two lap race! Was a tad relieved to get past the guy wearing jeans and tee shirt who hadn’t done his shoe laces up and was smoking a fag, had he finished ahead of me I would have had to seriously reassess my training regime!
After much huffing and puffing got to the new field finish area, things were a bit congested here, that’s my excuse for lack of a spriit finish anyway!  Still, at least we didn’t have to climb up past the school again which would doubtless have felt like good training for Launceston by that stage.  Cup of water and useful paperweight later I was feeling much better and thinking maybe this running lark isn’t so bad.
Most people seemed pleased with how things went, poor Rory still suffering from his injury though.  (Will however let them tell their own stories) the weather was lovely and my only regret was not finishing in time to see a member of a rival organisation fall over just before finish line (Sorry Sam!) incentive to get out training and be faster if ever there was one.
Thanks to Newquay RR, Cubert school, Jan and the Carn runners supporters club who were out in strength: I honestly did try to wave back but was loosing limb and brain function fast, please keep cheering thou it really does help”.

And last but by no means least - Steve Marks:

"I am not going to give the usual flippant report this time. And yes I’ll keep it short.
I hate this race anyway ‘cos I’m a plodder and even though I had a PB, I would rather write about others.
I must admit it was uplifting to see so many of our Ladies, especially some of the newer members, turn into the finishing straight, stick their chins out and dig deep enough to come in with cracking times. I don’t think one of them was passed in the straight. Well done gells, the crème de la crème. Biggest cheer from me goes to my better half. I am normally at the finish to cheer her in but but the time I had got a drink and picked up the dust collector she was already in!
Great night all round for the Carn.
Normal service will be resumed after the Ruby Run."
