First ever official game for Redruth CC Ladies……..
On the morning of Sunday 20th May 2007, ten players accompanied by Manager Paul Hancock, assisted by Aaron Hancock and Jo Strick headed to Truro CC to take part in an 8-a-side cricket festival.
An FA cup style draw saw Redruth drawn with Truro and Grampound round for the first stages of the ‘Cornwall Cricket Board Women’s 8-a-side Club Trophy’.
The festival rules:
- Matches will be 8-a-side and with a maximum of 8 overs per side (6 ball overs).
- No bowler may bowl more than 3 overs per innings.
- The batting order of teams will be fixed as follows: positions 4-8 must be occupied by the wicket keeper and those that are bowlers. This leaves positions 1-3 for those who are not bowlers, but obviously in the event of more than four bowlers being used, extra bowlers will have to occupy these positions.
- Deliveries that bounce more than twice before reaching the batter and are not strikeable will be deemed as no balls.
- There will be a 3 run penalty for wides and no balls, but no extra delivery.
- There will be 3 points for a win, 2 points for a tie and 1 point for a loss.
Game 1 v Truro
Playing on Truro’s main ground, having lost the toss, Redruth were put into bat with openers Tiffany Hobbs and Rhian Berryman making a total of 34 runs off 8 overs for no loss (24 extras bowled).
Due to the festival rules, Redruth decided to bowl all the girls. They bowled admirably, opening with Becky Kennedy and Louise Strick, and then Rhian, Tiffany, Sarah, Charissa and Sophie followed on with an over each.
Although Truro won the game before the full 8 overs of the game were completed, the second innings played on, so that both teams could gain more experience. Truro finished with 66 runs for no loss (36 extras bowled).
Game 2 v Grampound Road
Again, playing on Truro’s main ground, Redruth again lost the toss and were put into bat. This time, Tiffany and Louise opened the batting, followed by Sarah, Becky, Lucy, Sophie and Rhian….making a total of 42. Tiffany was top scorer with a total of 16 runs, which included 2 well placed 4’s. (21 extras bowled).
Again trying the ‘bowl’ everyone tactic, Redruth opened with Becky and Tiffany, followed by Louise, Sarah, Rhian, Leanne and Sophie. Grampound Road managed to pass Redruth’s total of 42 before the full 8 overs, however, as per our game against Truro, the game played on to give both sides more experienced. Grampound Road finished on 62 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. (40 extras bowled). Wicket takers were: Rhian Berryman and Leanne Hobbs.
Game 3 v Falmouth – wooden spoon play off for 5th & 6th place!
Playing on the council pitch next door to the main ground, Redruth won the toss and elected to field. Deciding to play the game with our main bowlers and to try and curtail the amount of extra’s bowled, Redruth opened with Becky and Louise, with Tiffany sharing the overs too. Falmouth made 62 runs for the loss of 1 wicket – their number 2 batsman bowled by Becky. (19 extras bowled).
Having utilised our main bowlers for the first innings, Redruth’s batting tactic for the second innings, was to open with Sarah and Rhian, try and go for the runs and if this didn’t come off, to get more batsmen in and have our stronger batsman in from the allotted 4-8 batting positions – as set out in the festival rules.
Sarah made 3 runs in total, before being run out whilst pushing for a 4th run, Rhian was bowled for 1 run, and Sophie went in at number 3 and managed 2 runs before being caught. Lucy our wicket keeper came in at number 4 and hit a beautiful 4 to get her off the mark and amassed 9 runs (not out) in total and was able supported by Louise who had 2 not out. (22 extras bowled) and Redruth finished on 39 for 3 off 8 overs.
An exciting game, where Redruth fiercely took on the challenge to chase the runs set by Falmouth.
Captain Sarah Stevens was delighted with the effort and spirit shown by all the team during the festival and was proud of their achievements in what were their first ever games as Redruth CC Ladies. So much potential ….. ‘from little acorns grow mighty oaks’…..here’s to the rest of the season!
Thanks to all at Truro for the day.
