New Womens Running Group
Tuesdays 6.30pm at the Hub Club

The Women's Running Network was founded by women for women whatever their age, stage, shape or size.
It introduces running to women in a safe, fun and social environment.
Founded in Exeter in 1998, it is steadily growing throughout the UK taking running to women.
The WRN is affiliated to UK Athletics, but it is not a running club in the usual sense.
For instance, there is not a single club house or a single club night. Instead, the Women's Running Network consists of a number of locally organised groups that are co-ordinated through the network. At the current time the majority of the groups are located in the South West of England but there are plans to develop groups in other parts of the country.
All the organisers are trained by the network and meet regularly helping new, intermediate and experienced runners get the most from their running. Because the groups are relatively small and local, you will be given individual attention and your group leader will know you personally.

Why an all women's group?
Some women may feel threatened by running with men who are often more competitive. Being in a group encourages motivation and confidence with safety in numbers!
But I have never run before!
We welcome women just like you. The Women's Running Network caters for women of all running abilities including the complete beginner. Even if you are are unfit and have never run before, the Women's Running Network can help you get started giving you sensible advice, support and company while you run. You will be shown how to run safely with warm-up and cool-down stretches, and will be surprised and delighted by your weekly improvement.
Reasons to Run
Many of the women who have joined our groups in the last three years have personal stories to tell about why they starting running and what joining the WRN has done for them. Here are some examples;
Negative experience of PE at school.
Lack of belief in their ability to run.
Thinking that they have to be thin, young, light and fast to enjoy running.
Many will say that joining the Women's Running Network changed their lives.
Increased confidence.
Friendship.
Weight management.
Fitness and wellbeing.
Able to take on challenges they never thought possible in running and in life.
It's these stories that motivate what we do in the Network and what makes our work so worthwhile and rewarding to us.
Whilst catering for the fit and fast we specialise in providing support and motivation to beginner women of any age, shape, size and fitness level who want to try running.
We also know that running has major and well publicised benefits, including:
It's one of the best exercises for weight management.
It's a key preventative exercise for osteoporosis.
Running keeps the heart, lungs and circulation healthy.
Running has been cited as having a preventative role in relation to some cancers.
We know that is enhances mood .
We know that running brings self esteem and confidence.
We know that running with other women is safer, fun, social and life enriching.
We would love you to give it a try...

Payment for weekly runs are generally £2.00 per session.

About the organisers
Both Alison and Sally are qualified Fitness in Running And Walking coaches. Sally is part way through completing her Level 2 coaches award. Both have been running on and off for a many years although Ali is the competitive one having entered races from Race for Life to the Silverstone Half Marathon.
Ali is a Mum to two teenagers, two dogs and assorted other furry friends. She is efficient, with a good memory and local knowledge. She deals with phone calls, paperwork, route planning and operating her Garmin.
Sally has no children, just a very unfriendly cat. She is scatty and disorganised. As a qualified sports therapist it could be argued she has more technical knowledge, however this consumes enough of her brain that she often forgets her watch and cannot be trusted with a garmin. She also writes the newsletter and writes a weekly report on the runs.
HOOKED
By Sue “Running Machine” Wellham
For me, like so many others it all started with the race for life. Having never taken part in a running event before it was a step into the unknown. I needn’t have worried as it turned out to be an incredible and very enjoyable experience.
Those of you who have taken part in one of these events will know what
a humbling experience it is.Hundreds of ladies all shapes and sizes running for the same cause, to raise money to fight breast cancer. It was a lovely sunny day for the run in Falmouth. As we all stood at the start line (after many trips to the portaloo’s) following the warm up session all you could see was a sea of bodies all with the reasons they were running pinned to their backs.
Some in memory of loved ones, some for those fighting it and some for
those who had beaten it.
This caused a lump in your throat, but then you were off..... Carried along by the wave of bodies.
Out past the beach, and then a steady climb up and around the castle. It was all a blur by now, my eyes were running due to the wind and the effort my lungs were having to make and I tried not to think of the pain in the back of my throat. Time to think again why I was running and it did the trick.
Then suddenly, we were going down hill and back along the beach road. There were people smiling and clapping you home.
Those heavy legs were suddenly light and bouncy and my goodness I was flying!!!
Then it was all over but for a medal, a goody bag and feeling absolutely fabulous.
That was it and with the prodding from Sally to join the network..........
Hooked and loving it

Spread the Word
We are very keen to get more members, especially novice runners, Racers for Life or any one simply wanting to get fit or loose weight!
Please share your newsletter with friends, take it into work or any where else you think potential members may lurk! We have also had business cards printed so make sure you ask Ali for some to keep with you, especially if you are out running and see any ladies running by themselves.
Lastly the Women’s Running Network has revamped their website and we have our own page. Take a look and you will find some familiar faces!

Reasons to Run!
Many running and fitness magazines throughout time have listed countless reasons why we should run. We are always entertained by the reasons you lot manage to come up with for NOT running! Sue managed to eclipse everyone the other night when her dog swallowed the ball, yeah, and I bet it ate her homework too!! Here, she spins the yarn…
Any excuse!!
The girls always have a joke about excuses not to run and some evenings with the rain beating down and it being cold and dark they are quite easy to find. Never the less - beat this one.
There I was on a club night sat in the vets with our 18-month-old Boxer who on her walk had swallowed a large hollow latex ball. It had gone straight down and she was still puzzled as to where it had gone! In fact I was on the end of the dirty looks as if I was to blame. No running club for me that night. An x-ray showed the ball had re-inflated and one operation later the ball was returned. Needless to say it went straight in the bin. The Boxer, Saffron, now known as Zippy (beautiful scar) is fine and back to her totally mad self.
The vet’s bill made the price of my new running shoes pale into oblivion.
