Steven Green selected to represent Great Britain at the European Indoor Championships

Cornwall’s University of Bath based athlete Steve Green has been selected for the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for this weekend’s European Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

The former Cornwall Athletic Club athlete, who is now coached by Malcolm Arnold at the UK Athletics High Performance Centre at the University of Bath, has been selected to contest the individual 400m and is a member of Britain’s 4×400m squad for the championships.

Steven, who is studying for a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Bath, will make his senior debut in a Great Britain vest at these championships.

The 24-year-old Cambridge University Physics graduate, whose family home is in Helston, has been in outstanding form indoors this year and  has already slashed his 400 metres personal best from 48.98 to 46.69 seconds.

“It’s been a brilliant winter,” he said. “Everything has gone well.  I’ve run indoors in the past but usually something has gone wrong somewhere. This year it’s all come together.”

Steven, who has been at the University of Bath for just over a year, will continue to focus on the 400m hurdles during the outdoor season.

He chose to study in Bath because it provided an outstanding combination of academia and athletics. “The Mathematics department here is one of the best in the country and it’s probably the best place in the country to train for 400m hurdles, so I couldn’t really go wrong on either front.”

“It’s a great group to train with,” he added. “The sessions for 400m with Dale (Garland) and Dan (Cossins) are very hard.  We all push each other really hard and that works for all of us.”

Steven missed virtually all of the outdoor season last summer after tripping on a hurdle, when he broke his collar bone and cracked a bone in his elbow. Now the Newham and Essex Beagle is making up for lost time – but he didn’t expect to make the Europeans.

“With a personal best of 48.98, the Europeans weren’t really on my mind but then I ran 47.03 at the AAAs and everything changed,” he said. “It’s an exciting time,” he added. “I just want to repeat some of my good times this season and do myself justice at the Europeans.”

The European Indoor Championships get underway on Friday 2 March and conclude on Sunday 4 March.
