Cornwall Athletic Club’s Track and Field team clinched the runner’s up spot in this seasons South West Track and Field League Division One fixture at the Exeter Arena last weekend. The club therefore maintained its enviable record of never finishing outside of the top three since entering the league nine years ago. Cornwall Athletic Club has won the league four times, finished runners up four times and were third in 2006.
Last year Cornwall won six of the seven age group competitions but this year the Under 15 Girls were the only team successfully to defend their title, although th Senior and Under 20 Men finished second by the narrowest of margins, just one point behind Yeovil Athletic Club.
A slightly below par performance in their final match saw the local club finish third behind the league champions, Yeovil Athletic Club and Cornish rivals, Newquay and Par Athletic Club.
‘A’ string victories from the forty three strong team were at a premium, although there were three quality middle distance performances from the six individual club winners. In the Under 17 Men’s age group Sam Harry knocked over two seconds off his 800 metres best, clocking a fine 2 minutes 2.1 seconds, with team mate Daniel Drew also reducing his personal best to 2 minutes 5 seconds, winning the ‘B’ string in the same race. Twelve year old Sam Heslop-George continued on his winning ways in the South West League, fighting off a strong challenge from the Poole Athletic Club runner in the Under 13 800 metres crossing the line in 2 minutes 25.7 seconds, to maintain an excellent unbeaten record in all five South West League matches this summer. English Schools Cross Country Champion, Conor Robinson cruised to victory in the Under 15 3000 metres, clocking 9 minutes 30.8 seconds and can now set his sights on his preferred option, cross country.
Lamorna Newman was close to her best and once again below the National Grade One standard, winning the Under 15 200 metres in 26.5 and in the Under 17 age group Emma Wagstaff leapt into second place in the County rankings with victory in the 300 metres, clocking a very respectable 43.3 seconds. Phil Warwicker was the sole field event winner in his favoured event, the triple jump, leaping 12 metres 37 in the Under 20 competition.
